When I saw this poetry collection, many ideas came to mind about how it could be used in the classroom.  You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You: Very Short Scary Stories to Read Together written by Mary Ann Hoberman is a collection of cute and creepy poems about creatures such as a mummy, a dinosaur, and a ghoul that can be read as a dialogue.  The text in these poems is coded in three different colors; the text for the first reader to read is blue, the text for the second reader to read is purple, and the text for the readers to read together is orange.  This adds a little fun to the basic reading of poetry by allowing readers to interact and read together.  Read this collection of poems with a friend, and you both will be laughing and covered in goosebumps!

Michael Emberly used pencil, watercolor, and dry pastel on hot-press watercolor paper to draw his animated illustrations for this poetry collection.  The illustrations are drawn throughout each poem, and they add a lot to the poems by showing what is taking place.  The characters’ faces show their feelings and personality very well.  Children would really enjoy looking at these comical illustrations as they read each poem.  I know I did!

There are many ways this poetry collection could be used in any classroom ranging from first through fifth grade.  Most of these poems have a Halloween theme, so they could be used during a fun poetry lesson around Halloween.  Since these poems are written as a dialogue, they could encourage reading by having students partner read or by dividing a class into two groups and having them choral read their respective parts.  One of these poems, “The Mummy”, could be used as a fun way to introduce a lesson about mummies and ancient Egypt.  Therefore, this poetry collection would be very useful in any elementary classroom.
